How to Transcribe Zoom Calls 100% Locally on Your Mac

5 min read

No cloud. No bot. No meeting link. Just your Mac, your audio, and a transcript that never leaves your device.

The Problem with Zoom Transcription

Zoom has built-in transcription, but it only works with cloud recordings. If you record locally, you get an audio file with no transcript. Zoom’s own support docs confirm this.

The workaround? Upload your recording to a cloud service like Otter or Fireflies. But now your meeting audio is on someone else’s server, processed by someone else’s AI, and governed by someone else’s terms of service.

Third-party tools like Otter, Fireflies, and Granola solve the transcription problem but create a new one: your private conversations live in someone else’s cloud. Otter is currently facing a federal class-action lawsuit for recording without consent. Fireflies faces similar BIPA complaints.

There’s a better way.

What “Locally” Actually Means

“Local” gets misused in this space. Some tools claim to be “local” because they record to a local file, then upload it to their cloud for processing. Others claim to work “offline” but send your data to servers in Frankfurt or AWS.

Truly local means:

You can verify this by turning on Airplane Mode and transcribing a call. If it works, it’s truly local. If it doesn’t, your “local” tool is phoning home.

How to Transcribe a Zoom Call Locally (Step by Step)

Step 1: Open Local Transcriber

Launch the app. It lives in your menu bar. No account to create, no API key to configure, no meeting link to paste.

Step 2: Join your Zoom call as usual

Join Zoom the way you normally would. Local Transcriber doesn’t need your meeting link and doesn’t join as a participant. Nobody in the meeting will know you’re transcribing.

Step 3: Hit Record

Click the record button in Local Transcriber (or use the keyboard shortcut, or ask your AI agent to start it via CLI). The app captures both your microphone and system audio, so both sides of the conversation are transcribed.

Step 4: Talk. The transcript appears in real time.

As the conversation happens, Local Transcriber generates a live transcript with speaker labels. You (or your AI agent) can query the transcript mid-call. No waiting for the meeting to end.

Step 5: Stop recording. Get your .md file.

When the call ends, hit stop. Local Transcriber saves the transcript as a Markdown file (.md) to a folder you choose. Speaker labels, timestamps, and an AI-generated summary are included.

The file is yours. Open it in Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, or any text editor. Your AI tools (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, or any MCP-connected app) can read it directly from your filesystem. No copy-pasting from a cloud dashboard.

We can run auth and billing in parallel. I'll take billing.

**[00:03:45] Sarah:** What about the deploy issue?

**[00:03:52] Marcus:** Yeah, deploy is blocked on the CI
fix. I filed it as ENG-847, marked urgent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transcribe Zoom calls without sending audio to the cloud?

Yes. Local Transcriber runs entirely on your Mac using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. Your audio never leaves your machine. You can verify this by running in Airplane Mode.

Do I need to invite a bot to my Zoom meeting?

No. Local Transcriber captures system audio directly from your Mac. No bot joins the meeting, no meeting link is needed, and other participants won’t know you’re transcribing.

Does local Zoom transcription include speaker labels?

Yes. Local Transcriber uses speaker diarization to label who said what. You can rename speakers to real names after the call for searchable, readable transcripts.

Does this work with Google Meet and Teams too?

Yes. Local Transcriber captures system audio, so it works with any app that plays audio through your Mac. See our guides for Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.

Some states (California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Hawaii) require all parties to consent before recording a conversation. It is your responsibility to comply with applicable laws. Always obtain consent from all participants before recording.
