Privacy Policy

Our Commitment to Privacy

Local Transcriber is designed with privacy as the core principle. We collect no data about you, your audio, or your usage.

What We Collect

We collect nothing.

  • No analytics or telemetry
  • No crash reports
  • No usage data
  • No audio files
  • No personal information
  • No cloud synchronization

How It Works

Local Transcriber runs entirely on your Mac. Your audio is processed locally using Apple's speech recognition framework. Transcripts are saved as .md files to your disk — under your control, in a directory you choose.

Nothing is sent to the cloud. No vendor has access to your data. You can verify this by:

  • Opening Activity Monitor and checking network activity while recording
  • Running in Airplane Mode — the app works fully offline
  • Using your Mac's firewall to block the app from network access

Your Data Ownership

All transcripts are yours. They live in your file system, in a location you choose. You can:

  • Edit, rename, or delete transcripts at any time
  • Back them up manually or via Time Machine
  • Share them with anyone, or keep them private
  • Use them in other apps (Claude, Obsidian, Notion, etc.)

Permissions

Local Transcriber requests only the permissions it needs to function:

  • Microphone access: To capture your audio
  • Screen recording permission: To access system audio (required by macOS)
  • File system access: To save transcripts where you specify

We do not request access to your contacts, calendar, photos, or other sensitive data.

Third-Party Services

The App: Local Transcriber uses only Apple's built-in frameworks:

  • Apple's Speech Recognition API (runs locally on your device)
  • Apple Intelligence for optional summary generation (runs on-device, not sent to Apple)

The app contains no third-party analytics, error tracking, or data collection services.

The Website: This website (localtranscriber.com) uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use the site. Google Analytics collects anonymized usage data such as pages visited, time on site, and referral sources. This data is used solely to improve the website. No data from the app is sent to Google Analytics. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Two-Party Consent Notice

Recording calls and conversations is subject to state and federal laws. Some jurisdictions (California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Hawaii) require all parties to consent before recording.

It is your responsibility to ensure you comply with all applicable laws when using Local Transcriber. Always obtain consent from all participants before recording.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy in the future. Any significant changes will be noted in release notes. Your continued use of Local Transcriber constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
